In the heart of the Brandenburg forest, UdK Berlin students, led by Prof. Giovanni Betti and architect Anna Bajanova, explored the potential of circular construction. The seminar Kohlengrube -led by Anna Bajanova- took the elements of the Material Circle pavilion—originally built from salvaged wood for exhibitions in Berlin—and gave it a second life within the ruins of an old Zechenhaus.
Inspired by the site's fragmented history, the team designed a wooden structure that integrates salvaged materials, the ruins on site and the tree trunks of the forest, creating a dynamic play of light and shadow. The reuse of materials followed the principle form follows material availability. This pavilion not only reactivates a forgotten landscape but also challenges us to rethink the endless possibilities of reuse in architecture.
